Can I Drink Coffee While Wearing Invisalign?

Invisalign is an alternative to traditional braces. It's a clear aligner used for orthodontic treatments that help align your teeth or close small gaps between them.

Another advantage of Invisalign, besides the fact that it is transparent, is that it can be taken off when eating or drinking.

But, how about when you are enjoying your cup of coffee? Should you take the aligners off then too?

How To Enjoy Coffee With Invisalign

One of the benefits Invisalign has is the fact that it is removable. If you are a coffee drinker and wonder if you can still enjoy your regular morning cup, the answer is yes, but with a few conditions.

  • Invisalign is made out of thermoplastic, and if you are drinking hot beverages without taking them off, this could affect the trays. Take them off the moment you want to enjoy your hot coffee.
  • When you remove your aligner, place it into its case. Rinse them before putting them in the case, and before placing them back on your teeth.
  • Avoid sugar and cream in your coffee. The high content of sugar can stimulate bacteria growth on your teeth as well as the trays and this can increase the risk of cavities.
  • Clean your teeth after having your coffee. This way you avoid any bacteria growth in the trays that can affect both your natural teeth and your Invisalign. Cleaning your teeth after drinking coffee will remove any trace of sugar and lower the risk of staining your teeth.
  • Be aware of the time spent sipping on your coffee. Yes, Invisalign can be removed, but staying too long without it can also slow down the process. Spending 1 hour on your coffee every day is not recommended. The sooner you put your trays back on, the better.

What Does Invisalign Do?

This type of aligner moves your teeth slowly by using custom-made trays changed every few weeks. It takes an average of 12 months until the orthodontic treatment is completed. Of course, this depends on the severity of your dental problems and you may need to wear it a bit longer until you can see proper results.

Invisalign helps people correct:

  • Small gaps between teeth
  • A slight overbite or underbite
  • Crossbite
  • Crowded teeth

If you consider getting Invisalign, talk to your dentist to see if you fit the requirements to benefit from this type of treatment.
